Adding Category Divider Pages
Group exhibits with divider pages while keeping your document order intact.
Category slipsheets are divider pages inserted between groups of exhibits in a combined PDF. They are different from placeholder pages created for files whose contents cannot be included.
Add category dividers
- Open Settings → Export Options, enable Combine all exhibits into single PDF, and keep Include table of contents with bookmarks selected (it is on by default).
- Open Formatting options and select Add category slipsheets.
- In the document list, enter a Category for each document that belongs to a group. On compact screens, open Document actions for the file to reach this field.
- Press Enter or leave the category field to save it. Use the same spelling for documents in the same category.
- Arrange neighboring documents into the groups you want. Use drag-and-drop or the document order controls.
- Prepare the set and review the combined PDF's contents, dividers, and exhibit pages before downloading.
How grouping works
ExhibitPrep keeps the document order you arranged. It adds a divider before each run of neighboring documents sharing a category; it does not sort the files into categories for you.
For example, Medical Records → Correspondence → Medical Records creates three groups. Move the medical records together first if you want one medical-records section. A document without a category does not get its own named divider.
Category names appear on the dividers and in the combined document's navigation. The inserted pages count toward combined-PDF page positions. They do not add to an exhibit's source-page count or Bates sequence.
Check the result
Confirm that each divider is followed by the intended documents, that categories are spelled consistently, and that contents links reach the correct exhibit. Check a document immediately after each divider, where a page-reference mistake is easiest to miss.
Fix a common problem
- A category appears more than once: check the order. The same category in separated runs produces separate dividers.
- A divider is missing: check the category field and the Add category slipsheets option, then prepare the combined PDF again.
- Page references increased: divider pages are real pages in the combined file. Use its updated contents rather than an earlier file's page numbers.
- You see “Placeholder page” on a document: that is a different feature. The original file's contents were not embedded. If you need those contents in the exhibit, create a PDF containing them and add that PDF instead. See supported files.
Keep the source documents and inspect the final PDF; a divider does not replace an exhibit's contents.
