Trial Binder Page Labels and Contents
Set up per-exhibit labels such as A1 and A2, and check them against the contents.
Trial Binder is an optional formatting style. It can add a label and page number to each exhibit page, such as A1, A2, then B1; an exhibit labelled with a number reads 1.1, 1.2, then 2.1, so the page is never read as part of the exhibit number. Choose it when that format suits your matter's instructions; the style does not certify court compliance.
Set it up before stamping
- Arrange the documents and confirm each exhibit has the intended label.
- Open Settings → Export Options. Enable Combine all exhibits into single PDF and keep Include table of contents with bookmarks selected (it is on by default).
- Open Formatting options and choose Trial Binder.
- Leave Stamp page labels on each page selected to print per-exhibit labels at the bottom center of the exhibit pages.
- Enable Show page ranges to show ranges such as A1–A5 in the contents. The range appears only when page labels are also enabled.
- Enter descriptive exhibit titles in the document list. On compact screens, open the file's Document actions to reach its title controls.
- Check placement, prepare the set, and inspect the finished combined PDF before downloading.
Know which number you are looking at
- PDF page position: the page's place in the combined file, counting contents and divider pages.
- Binder page label: the exhibit label followed by its page number, such as A1 (or 1.1 for a numbered exhibit). It starts again for each exhibit. When Number every page of each exhibit is on, the stamp already carries the page and no binder page label is printed.
- Bates number: a separate page identifier you configure in Bates & Labels. It can continue across the source documents.
For example, the first page of Exhibit A might be PDF page 3, carry binder label A1, and also carry Bates number ABC-0001. Those references have different purposes.
Check the finished result
Inspect the first and last page of each exhibit. Confirm the binder labels match the contents ranges and do not cover source text. Follow a contents link to check its destination. A contents range is not a substitute for checking the actual pages.
Fix a common problem
- Binder controls are unavailable in review: these labels are applied during stamping. Return to setup, change the options, and stamp again. After delivery, start with Make a change.
- You do not want A1-style labels: choose Standard before stamping, or turn off Stamp page labels on each page. With page labels off, contents references use PDF page positions.
- A range does not appear: enable both the range and page-label options.
- Page labels overlap existing text: inspect the bottom-center area in the finished preview. Do not file an obstructed page; change the format or prepare a suitable source layout.
Check your filing instructions
Do not assume A1-style numbering satisfies a requirement for consecutive Arabic page numbers. For example, California Rule of Court 3.1110(c) addresses consecutive Arabic pagination; it does not prescribe this product's Trial Binder style. Check the rules and orders that apply to your filing. See checking court requirements.
