How to Create Exhibit Slipsheets
Exhibit slipsheets are separator pages that appear before each exhibit in a combined PDF or printed binder. ExhibitPrep generates them automatically — labeled with the correct exhibit number or letter — when you combine multiple exhibits in a single download.
- ExhibitPrep generates slipsheet separator pages automatically when the "Add slipsheets between exhibits" option is enabled in combine mode.
- Each slipsheet displays the exhibit label (Exhibit A, Exhibit 1, etc.) pulled from the stamp template — no separate label entry is required.
- Optional exhibit titles entered via the edit icon appear on the slipsheet beneath the label, helping viewers identify the exhibit before turning the page.
- California trial courts routinely expect slipsheets or tabbed dividers in physical exhibit binders per CRC 3.1110 practice.
- AAA and JAMS arbitration forums commonly require slipsheets between exhibits in their exhibit submission guidelines.
- Slipsheets work alongside the table of contents feature — ExhibitPrep places the TOC at the front and slipsheets between each exhibit in the combined PDF.
- PDF bookmarks are automatically created alongside slipsheets, pointing to the first page of each exhibit for digital navigation.
- No files are uploaded to a server — all slipsheet generation and PDF combining happens in your browser, keeping exhibit content private.

What a Slipsheet Looks Like
A slipsheet is a single page inserted before each exhibit. It displays the exhibit label prominently in the center of the page — for example, "Exhibit A" — in the same font and style used on the stamp. If you entered an exhibit title (such as "Medical Records from St. Mary's Hospital, Jan 2024"), that title appears beneath the label. The slipsheet occupies the same page dimensions as the exhibit PDFs it separates.
Slipsheets are purely for organizational clarity. They are not numbered in the exhibit's page count for purposes of the table of contents.
5-Step Process for Creating Exhibit Slipsheets
Upload All Exhibits to ExhibitPrep
Click "Upload Files" and add all of the exhibit PDFs you want to include in the combined document. You can drag and drop multiple files at once. After uploading, drag the rows in the exhibit list to set the correct order — slipsheets will appear before each exhibit in this sequence.
Select a Stamp Template
Choose an exhibit stamp template from the 26 available options. The exhibit label on the stamp (e.g., "Plaintiff's Exhibit A" or "Defendant's Exhibit 1") is automatically used on each slipsheet — the label text is pulled from the template without any additional configuration. The slipsheet font and styling match the stamp template for a consistent, professional appearance.
Enable Combine Mode and Slipsheets
In the export settings panel, check "Combine exhibits into single PDF." A sub-option labeled "Add slipsheets between exhibits" will appear — check this as well. You can also enable "Include table of contents" at this step; the two options are fully compatible and complement each other.
Add Exhibit Titles to Slipsheets (Optional)
To add a descriptive title to any slipsheet, click the edit (pencil) icon next to that exhibit in the list. Enter a brief description such as "Police Report, Case No. 2024-CR-1234" or "Lease Agreement dated March 15, 2024." This title appears on the slipsheet beneath the exhibit label and in the table of contents if TOC is also enabled.
Download the Combined PDF
Click "Download Combined PDF." ExhibitPrep stamps each exhibit, generates a slipsheet for each one, and assembles the final merged PDF in the correct sequence: TOC (if enabled) → Slipsheet A → Exhibit A → Slipsheet B → Exhibit B → … PDF bookmarks are automatically added pointing to the first page of each exhibit, so digital readers can navigate directly to any exhibit.
Generate labeled slipsheets automatically when combining exhibits
Upload exhibits, enable slipsheets and combine mode, and download a single PDF where each exhibit is preceded by its labeled separator page — no manual page creation.
When Slipsheets Are Required vs. Optional
Common Situations Requiring Slipsheets

- Federal e-filing: usually not required, but check judge's standing orders
- State e-filing portals: slipsheets not usually required for digital submissions
- Small claims court: informal; slipsheets typically not expected
- Administrative hearings: vary widely by agency and state
- Family law proceedings: check local rules; some courts specify format

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an exhibit slipsheet?
An exhibit slipsheet is a separator page inserted between individual exhibits in a combined PDF or printed binder. It displays the exhibit label (e.g., "Exhibit A" or "Exhibit 1") and optionally a brief description of the exhibit. Slipsheets serve as visual dividers that allow judges, opposing counsel, and witnesses to quickly find the start of each exhibit without searching through the document. Some courts and arbitration forums require slipsheets; others simply prefer them as a professional convention.
Are exhibit slipsheets required by courts?
Requirements vary by court and forum. California trial courts routinely expect slipsheets or tabbed dividers between exhibits in physical binders, consistent with CRC 3.1110. Many arbitration forums — including AAA and JAMS — specify slipsheets in their exhibit submission guidelines. Federal courts generally do not mandate slipsheets for e-filed exhibits, but they are common practice in trials. Always check your court's local rules and any standing orders from the assigned judge.
Does ExhibitPrep create slipsheets automatically?
Yes. When you enable "Add slipsheets between exhibits" in ExhibitPrep's combine settings, slipsheets are generated automatically for each exhibit in the batch. The exhibit label (e.g., "Exhibit A") is pulled from the stamp template and applied to the slipsheet without any manual input. If you enter an exhibit title by clicking the edit icon next to any exhibit, that title appears on the slipsheet alongside the label.
Can I customize the text that appears on a slipsheet?
Yes, partially. The exhibit label (Exhibit A, Exhibit 1, etc.) on the slipsheet is auto-filled from the stamp template and cannot be changed independently. You can add a custom title or description to each exhibit by clicking the edit icon next to the exhibit in the list — this text appears on the slipsheet beneath the label. The overall slipsheet style, font, and layout match ExhibitPrep's stamp template formatting for a consistent professional appearance.
